Childress Jr tops strong field of IMCA Modifieds Saturday

A strong field of IMCA Modifieds turned out as the racing season heats up. 20 Mid Cal Fabrication IMCA Modifieds checked in at the Bakersfield Speedway to do battle on the 1/3 mile clay oval for some hot summer night racing. Robby Sawyer of Bakersfield took an early control of the field as the 20 others have there work cut out contending with the smooth multi groove track. Ricky Childress Jr of Bakersfield, started seventh in the field but put on a masterful display of driving as he slowly picked his way through the field. In the end Childress captured his first main event win of the year followed by Sawyer, Roger Holder, John Piker and Logan Drake.

Central Valley Tank IMCA Stock cars produced another great battle for the winners check Saturday night. Steven Johnson has been dominating the class since moving up from the Hobby stock division. Saturday was again Johnson’s race but he did have a couple of threats from the other competitors. Johnson captured another win and keeps his lead in the points. Ron Hurt crossed in second followed by Troy Patee, Robby Sawyer and Alan Mendes rounding out the top 5.

12 Diamond IT Mod Lites checked in for the night of dirt track action. Jerry Flippo of Bakersfield had a strong outing Saturday night showing the way around the 1/3 mile clay oval to win the 20 lap feature. Anthony Balcazar finished second followed by Mathew Mayo, Kaden Cochrun and JD Brown.

Steve Drake captured another Late Model victory Saturday night over Nick Bartels, Larry Childress and Bill Egleston. Late Models return to action July 9th at the Bakersfield Speedway.

The traveling divisions of NMRA 3/4 Midgets and the CDCRA Dwarf cars were also racing Saturday at the Speedway. West Evans grabbed the NMRA main event win as John Isabella got CDCRA main event win.

Bakersfield Speedway is set for its popular event of the season this Saturday night with the 5th Annual Richie McGowan Memorial Fireworks Extravaganza. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA SportMods, Hobby Stocks and American Stocks will all be in action Saturday. Gates open at 4:00pm with racing getting underway at 6:00pm.
